Cove Gallery
John C. Hall is Cove Gallery’s artist of the month.
About the Artist
As a long time painter and art collector, I have asked many times, “Why do we artists paint?”. What drives us to create? For me, over time the answer has remained the same….the joy of painting, an opportunity to grow, and to share.
After four decades of creating, I wonder what lies ahead? Much of my journey has been in abstract painting…moving from the descriptive to what lies behind…feelings instead of objects. Perhaps that will continue, but of late my focus has been experimental…trying new things, processes and materials driven by pure curiosity. “What if…”
So often, we artists get driven my convention. Perhaps this stems from what we were taught. It may be influenced by the latest trends. But convention falls short when it fails to question. Why must pictures be rectangular or square? More recently, mine have been oblique’s or diamond formats. This series started simply by tilting a painting in my hands which did not seem to work. Doing so produced an interesting visual result.
Come meet John in person at the October Laguna First Thursday Art Walk Reception on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 6 – 9 pm in the Cove Gallery.
The New Cove Gallery is directly across PCH from the front entrance to the Surf & Sand Resort at 1550 South Coast Highway, and next door to Vertigo Home, in the historic Granada Building.

You will also have the opportunity to view the works of our featured artist for the month of October – Dana Richardson.
Dana earned a BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her collection of female portrait studies arise from a desire to inspire women to connect to their deep spirit, to kindle self-confidence and pursuit of creative ideas, and to celebrate strength in individuality. Richardson’s oil paintings portray female figures as larger than life, erupting from amidst the cityscape, expressing women’s strength and ability to rise above circumstances.
Her contemporary art has been exhibited in several museums including the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, The Monterey Museum of Art, The San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Museum of Arts and Design.

Michael Heintz Photography
September 20 – October 21
Michael Heintz, a long time Laguna Beach area artist presents a series of photographs juxtaposing automotive remnants of the past frozen in stunning natural landscapes. The desolate environments are perfect settings for these automobiles to be used in creating compositions. They are now silent and deteriorated, becoming studies of forms and surface patinas due to the extremes of weather and age.
Michael’s artwork has been shown in both, Festival of Arts and Sawdust Festival, locally, and is in collections throughout the United States.
A photograph in the exhibit, Joe’s at 20 Below, is in the Festival of Arts Permanent Art Collection.

“To the fragile, frayed, and fragmented scraps that stitch and string together our life forms. To the bodies constructed of moments in time and memories. To the dissonant voices, disparately intertwined, scribbled on our sleeves, whispering our secret stories. To the well-kept, the hardly kept, the somebody’s, and the nobodies …these tales are for you.” Kathryn Megginson
There is no telling why people are drawn to the bizarre and haunting art but for some reason they are. Frightening, mysterious, and weird. This October, Las Laguna Gallery is pleased to present Spectacular: Eerie, Creepy, Scary Spooky.
This exhibition features works from art that have been described as peculiar, strange, bizarre, unsettling, or chilling. You are sure to leave show shocked, stunned and surprised.
