Dawson Cole Fine Art

Dawson Cole Fine Art Presents American Masters:  Exploring Portraiture in American Art

Featuring the original  “Head of a Spanish Musician,” 1880 by John Singer Sargent and “Breezy Day,” Original Oil on Panel by Richard Edward Miller, also from the 1800’s the gallery celebrates Portraiture in American Art.

Signed and dated 1880, this head study of a Spanish flamenco musician likely stems from the period when Sargent was in Spain and began initial work on his masterpiece El Paleo, now in the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum in Boston.  It contains many of the elements found in the studies leading to the final composition.

Miller, painted in Giverny in the Colony of American Impressionists and was known for his paintings of women posing languidly in interiors and outdoor setting.    Over the past several decades, Miller has been the subject of exhibition and his work has been reproduces extensively in exhibition catalogs and books on American Impressionism.

Most impressive is the simple beauty of his pieces; the peaceful co-mingling of all the inhabitants, be they people, or imaginary beasts. Matias’s combinations are always about balance and harmony between man and woman, family, community, and environments as well as finding the enlightenment to realize these dreams for all the cultures in his work.
