“Semiotics” Featuring James Verbicky
July 1, 2016 – August 31, 2016
Artist Reception: August 4th, 2016 from 6-8pm
The study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behavior
Existing in a Verbicky state of mind: derive meaning from his iconic images and textual vibrancy to expose your own state of mind. React and define your existence by reflecting on what you see and what makes ‘meaning’ for you.
James Verbicky’s striking multimedia works defy easy description, deftly combining elements of collage with layers of resin and dye to form panels that burst with color and texture. Verbicky’s appropriation of vintage advertising imagery invites viewers to contemplate a culture of media bombardment, while his masterful sense of proportion and color stimulate the senses.
“The media paintings bridge the gap between sculpture and painting by binding fragments of vintage media to one another, double-exposing language and image and melting them in upon themselves. By unearthing and layering the remnants of dozens of decades of disparate generations, the media paintings transcend simple words and images and become objects containing the essence of human culture.” – James Verbicky

Viewed in its entirety, Canyon Walkers offers a representation of people often seen walking along Laguna Canyon Road. Figures include The Art Student, representing LCAD students making their ways to and from classes; The Hiker and Companion, a casually dressed man with his dog representing those ready to enjoy the natural beauty of Laguna Canyon; and The Traveler, a figure in transition, as the canyon always is in transition, representing the colorful past and present of Laguna Canyon culture.

“My true love is creating paintings on canvas. In this new series, I find the entire process from beginning to end makes me happy. The impasto technique, or thickly textured paint that is almost three-dimensional in appearance, adds an element of strength to the bold brush strokes I use. For me, the result of this process conveys power, serenity and a strong sense of freedom,” said Terri Sopp Rae.
“Aquatics” a duo exhibition with Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock. Live painting in front of the gallery by three LCAD alumni Julie Madelmont, Aaron Brown and Jon Mann.
