Artist Reception: August 4th, 2016 from 6-8pm

Semiotics

The study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behavior

Existing in a Verbicky state of mind: derive meaning from his iconic images and textual vibrancy to expose your own state of mind. React and define your existence by reflecting on what you see and what makes ‘meaning’ for you.

James Verbicky’s striking multimedia works defy easy description, deftly combining elements of collage with layers of resin and dye to form panels that burst with color and texture. Verbicky’s appropriation of vintage advertising imagery invites viewers to contemplate a culture of media bombardment, while his masterful sense of proportion and color stimulate the senses.

“The media paintings bridge the gap between sculpture and painting by binding fragments of vintage media to one another, double-exposing language and image and melting them in upon themselves. By unearthing and layering the remnants of dozens of decades of disparate generations, the media paintings transcend simple words and images and become objects containing the essence of human culture.” – James Verbicky

Sunset Dream by Vince Broglio

The Signature Gallery

Thursday, August 4th, 6pm-9pm

The Signature Gallery presents: Vince Broglio “Catch A Wave” Show

During this Artwalk, meet resin artist Vince Broglio at The Signature Gallery, on 220 Forest Avenue, Laguna Beach.

Surfboard resin artist Vince Broglio will be unveiling a new series of wave-inspired resin sculptures and paintings. Inspired by his love for surfing, each resin wave represents a unique surf spot from around the world.  Full of color and movement, every sculpture and painting has its own extraordinary story.

To create his unbelievable sculptures, it takes Vince roughly two years to collect the resin that drips off surfboards during the glassing process. Approximately 1,000 to 1,200 surfboards are needed to generate enough resin to create a series of colorful multi-layered sculptures.  This may seem like a long time to wait for resin, but once you see those 1,200 brightly colored, individual layers in each sculpture, you’ll simultaneously be amazed and awed. Vince then cuts and carves away at each block of resin, creating large, intricate sculptures inspired by the ocean with its majestic waves.

While most of the colors of Vince’s sculptures are left up to chance, for his paintings, he makes bold, deliberate color choices. This is most evident in his ability to perfectly capture how sunlight reflects and absorbs the ocean water. Using a variety of tools, Vince is also able to manipulate the resin to create the difficult illusion of riptides and effervescence in his wave-inspired paintings.

Join The Signature Gallery, Thursday, August 4th, from 6pm-9pm to meet Vince, see his newest collection, and enjoy a live band and cocktails.
